TSA Rules
Good News: Injectable Medications Are Allowed
TSA permits injectable medications in carry-on bags. You do NOT need to put them in checked luggage (and shouldn't—temperature control).
- Inform TSA officer at security that you have injectable medication
- Medication should be clearly labeled (original packaging is best)
- Needles are allowed when accompanying injectable medication
- No limit on amount—bring what you need for your trip
Temperature & Storage
Unopened pens: Store refrigerated (36-46°F / 2-8°C). Can be at room temperature (up to 86°F / 30°C) for limited time—check your specific medication's guidelines.
In-use pens: Can typically be kept at room temperature for 4-8 weeks (varies by product). Check prescribing information for your specific medication.
Never freeze. Frozen medication is ruined. Never put in checked luggage (cargo holds can freeze).
Keeping Cool While Traveling
- Insulated travel case: FRIO pouches or similar cooling cases work without ice
- Ice packs: Wrap pen in cloth—don't let ice touch medication directly
- Hotel fridge: Store in fridge upon arrival; check temperature
- Avoid direct sunlight and hot cars
International Travel
- Carry prescription documentation: Doctor's letter or pharmacy label in case of questions
- Research destination rules: Most countries allow personal medication, but rules vary
- Bring more than you need: Account for delays, lost luggage, extended trips
- Time zone changes: Keep your injection on a consistent schedule. If crossing many time zones, ask your doctor about timing adjustment.
Pre-Trip Checklist
Before You Leave
- ☐ Enough medication for trip + extra

The Bottom Line
TSA allows injectable medications in carry-on—inform them at security and keep medication in original packaging. Never check GLP-1 pens (cargo holds freeze). Use insulated travel cases to maintain temperature. For international travel, bring prescription documentation and extra medication. Plan ahead for refrigeration at your destination.
