Is Byetta Still Available in 2026? Exenatide Status & Alternatives

If you're searching for Byetta availability, the short answer: brand-name Byetta no longer exists. AstraZeneca discontinued both Byetta (twice-daily exenatide) and Bydureon BCise (once-weekly exenatide) in October 2024. The FDA formally withdrew Byetta's approval in September 2025 — not for safety or efficacy reasons, but because the product is no longer marketed.

What Happened to Byetta?

Byetta (exenatide) was the first GLP-1 receptor agonist ever approved — it received FDA approval in 2005, predating semaglutide by over a decade. It was a breakthrough drug that established the entire GLP-1 class. But it was also a first-generation product with significant limitations: it required twice-daily injections, produced modest weight loss (3–5 lbs on average), and had a short half-life that limited its efficacy compared to newer agents.

As semaglutide and tirzepatide — which are dramatically more effective for both diabetes management and weight loss — captured the market, prescriptions for exenatide declined precipitously. AstraZeneca made the business decision to discontinue the product line, and the FDA subsequently withdrew approval since the drug was no longer commercially available.

Is Generic Exenatide Still Available?

Yes. Amneal Pharmaceuticals launched a generic version of exenatide injection in 2025. Both the 5 mcg (1.2 mL) and 10 mcg (2.4 mL) prefilled pen formulations are available. This generic is approved for type 2 diabetes management (not weight loss) and is currently the only exenatide product on the US market.

However, there is very little clinical reason to choose generic exenatide in 2026 unless you have a specific medical situation that requires it. Newer GLP-1 medications are more effective, more convenient (once-weekly vs twice-daily), and produce substantially more weight loss.
