The transition from injectable-only GLP-1 therapy to a full menu of oral options happened faster than most industry observers expected. Here's the research-based timeline of how we got here.

The Timeline

DateMilestoneSignificance
Sep 2019Rybelsus (oral semaglutide) FDA-approved for T2DMFirst oral GLP-1. Required SNAC absorption enhancer. Moderate bioavailability.
2020-2023Multiple oral GLP-1 candidates enter clinical trialsSmall-molecule approaches bypass the peptide absorption challenge.
Dec 2025Oral Wegovy FDA-approved for weight lossFirst oral GLP-1 specifically indicated for obesity.
Jan 2026Oral Wegovy commercial launchAvailable at pharmacies. No cold-chain shipping needed.
Apr 2026Foundayo (orforglipron) FDA-approvedFirst non-peptide small-molecule GLP-1. Different mechanism than semaglutide.
May 2026Ozempic tablets launched at 70,000+ pharmaciesOral semaglutide with cardiovascular indication. $149/mo self-pay.
Jun 2026Elecoglipron enters Phase IIIAstraZeneca's oral small-molecule GLP-1. Third distinct oral approach.
2027-2028Additional oral candidates expectedPfizer, Amgen, and smaller biotechs developing oral GLP-1s.

Why Oral Matters

Oral administration removes the primary patient barrier (needle aversion), eliminates cold-chain shipping requirements, simplifies travel, and — for small-molecule drugs — dramatically reduces manufacturing costs. The shift to oral formats is expected to expand the total addressable patient population significantly, bringing GLP-1 therapy to millions who avoided injectable treatment.
