The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge has generated excitement — and confusion. Here's what the CMS announcement actually says, sourced directly from official documents.

What It Is

A time-limited demonstration program from CMS providing eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries access to select GLP-1 medications at $50/month. It operates outside the standard Part D benefit structure.

Timeline

July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027 (18 months). CMS has indicated the program could inform longer-term coverage decisions.

Covered Medications

MedicationFormatManufacturer
Wegovy (semaglutide)Injectable + Oral pillNovo Nordisk
Zepbound (tirzepatide)Injectable (KwikPen)Eli Lilly
Foundayo (orforglipron)Oral pillEli Lilly

All doses and formulations of Wegovy are included. Novo Nordisk confirmed coverage for both injectable and oral pill formulations.

Eligibility

Enrolled in Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage with drug coverage. BMI ≥30, or BMI ≥27 with at least one weight-related comorbidity (heart disease, prediabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, among others). Must have a prescription from a licensed provider.

Cost Structure

Participating manufacturers provide medications at approximately $245/month net price. Beneficiaries pay approximately $50 per monthly prescription. The program does not affect standard Part D deductibles or catastrophic coverage thresholds.

What It Doesn't Cover

The Bridge program is specifically for weight management. Patients already receiving GLP-1 coverage for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or other FDA-approved indications continue through standard Part D benefits.
